Selected for you Events and Exhibitions in Rome

Every year, the city hosts a calendar of events and exhibitions that attract visitors from all over the world, and 2024 is no exception. The offerings are indeed rich and varied, ranging from history and art to music, theater, and cinema.

Phidias - monographic exhibition

The Capitoline Museums, located at Villa Caffarelli, host the first prestigious monographic exhibition dedicated to Phidias, the legendary and emblematic Greek genius of classical art.
The selection of over 100 works, some never before shown ― including archaeological finds, Greek originals and Roman replicas, paintings, manuscripts, and drawings, along with multimedia installations ― comes from the Museums System of Rome Capital, the Archaeological Museum of Bologna, the Academy of Fine Arts of Ravenna, the Archaeological Museum of Naples and the Cambellotti Archive, the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum and the Epigraphic Museum of Athens, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Vatican Museums and the Louvre Museum in Paris.

until May 5, 2024 – Villa Caffarelli

Escher

The largest exhibition of Escher ever staged to date, an anthology of approximately 300 works including the famous Hand with Reflecting Sphere (1935), Bond of Union (1956), Metamorphosis II (1939), Day and Night (1938), the renowned Emblemata series, and many others, just to name a few well-known to the general public. Additionally, numerous previously unseen works are also on display.

The exhibition pays tribute to the great Dutch genius on the centenary of his first visit to Rome in 1923, where he then lived for twelve years, from 1923 to 1935, in the Monteverde Vecchio district. As a testament to those years, the complete series of twelve Roman nocturnes produced in 1934 is also on display.

Until April 1, 2024 – Palazzo Bonaparte

The Art of Women in Rome - Secession, Futurism, and Return to Order

Exhibition of Female Artists Active in Rome during the Twentieth Century. Despite a significant presence of active female artists in Rome throughout the twentieth century, who also exhibited at the Biennials, Syndicates, and Quadrennials, as well as in the most important Roman galleries, only in recent years have some studies brought their work back into the spotlight. The exhibition, starting with a survey of works belonging to the collections of the Capitoline Museums, aims to document how, from the Futurist movement, through the years of fascism until the post-World War I period, the female painters and sculptors of those years reinterpreted and interpreted artistic commitment, particularly in the cultural life of the capital.

from June 1, 2024, to November 1, 2024 – Museums of Villa Torlonia – Casino dei Principi

Origins and Splendors of the Farnese Collection in 16th Century Rome

The Farnese Collection, epitome of erudite collecting, supported by Pope Paul III and his nephews, comprises paintings, ancient sculptures, sketches, drawings, and manuscripts. The exhibition showcases works representative of the Collection’s zenith, spanning from the early decades of the 16th century to the beginning of the 17th century, and includes a hundred masterpieces mainly from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, the Capodimonte Museum, the National Library, and other public and private collections. Special attention is given to the significance and importance that ancient sculptures had at the time, also concerning their placement in various Farnese residences, and the recovery of works originally part of the collection, over time dispersed in public or private collections. An additional focus is on the figure of Paul III and the intellectuals who revolved around his court.

Until May 31, 2025 – Capitoline Museums

Uninhabitable architecture

The exhibition, featuring 150 photographs, historical videos, and unpublished texts, offers a new perspective on architecture, highlighting a conception different from the one usually associated with residential functionality, in order to analyze the relationship between living and building. To this end, the exhibition examines some buildings of remarkable symbolic value distributed throughout the national territory, representative of the cities in which they were built without the assumption of habitability.

In addition to the photographs taken from the Luce Archive and other important archives, the exhibition juxtaposes works by contemporary photographers and artists, such as Gianni Berengo Gardin, Guido Guidi, Steve McCurry, and Marzia Migliora.
