This excursion allows to visit and compare two splendid villas from two different ages.
The Villa Adriana, the largest and most splendid villa of Ancient Rome, at 20km far from the capital. It lies on a beautiful valley south of Tivoli, which was renowned since Antiquity for its country residences of Roman aristocrats. The enormous complex of buildings was built by will of Emperor Hadrian, who wished to recreate in his Imperial residence the main monuments of the Empire, in particular those of his beloved Greece: sites of the villa, buildings, baths, nimphea, gardens and fountain complexes, valleys often carried the name of one of those monuments he had seen during his long journeys through the Roman Empire, and, like miniatures, reproduce the features of the originals. Drive then up to the lovely town of Tivoli and visit the the most beautiful gardens and fountains in all of Italy inside the Villa D'Este. You will be fascinated by the frescoes and furnishings of the Villa built by Cardinal Ippolito d'Este in the 1500s. Explore then the  five hundred water jets made of tiny drinking fountains, massive reflecting pools, a fountain that once played music through organ pipes, and one that's a scale model of the great monuments of Rome. After the pleasant walk sit in the open terrace of the villa for a drink and enjoy a marvellous view on the gardens.
