On the beautiful valley South of Tivoli and at only 30km far from the capital, you discover the largest and most splendid Villa of Ancient Rome. In fact, this area was renowned since antiquity for its country residences of the Roman aristocrats.
Here the Emperor Hadrian, built the enormous complex of buildings of Villa Adriana. He recreate in his Imperial residence, the main monuments of the Empire, in particular those of his beloved Greece.
And at the Sites of the Villa – buildings, baths, nimphea, gardens and fountain complexes and valleys – he often give the name of one of those monuments he had seen during his long journeys through the Roman Empire.
After the visit of Villa Adriana you take the car and you drive up to the lovely town of Tivoli to visit, not only a Villa, but the most beautiful gardens and fountains in all of Italy. Such as the Splendid Gardens of Villa D’Este, residence built by Cardinal Ippolito d’Este in the 1500s.
You will be fascinated by the frescoes and furnishings inside the Villa D’Este, but also by the five hundred water jets made of tiny drinking fountains: massive reflecting pools, a fountain that once played music through organ pipes, and one that’s a scale model of the great monuments of Rome…
